UK Train Travel: A Hellish Experience or a Joyful Journey? (2026)

The railways hold a special place in my heart, but modern train travel is an absolute nightmare. I'm not alone in this sentiment; East Midlands Railway (EMR) has been named one of the UK's least reliable train operators, and it's not hard to see why. Despite the cheerful staff, the overall experience is a frustrating, distressing, and unreliable one. The railway network seems designed to be as frustrating as possible in 2026, which is a shame, especially in an age of climate concern where public transport should be appealing.

One of my fondest memories is seeing the Humber Bridge slide into view from my train seat, but this is a rare occurrence. It's a real shame that the experience is often so negative. The overcrowding is a major issue, with people crammed into vestibules, and the delays and cancellations are a constant source of stress. It's no wonder that people are opting for coaches instead, even if it means a longer journey.

The new state-owned company, Great British Railways (GBR), is an opportunity to turn things around. It's a chance to really grab the issue by the horns and sort it out. We should be proud of our railways and look forward to using them, but the current system is forcing people to consider other forms of transport. The prices are eye-watering, and the reliability is poor. It's time for a change, and I hope that GBR is up to the challenge.

In my opinion, the railways have the potential to be a great asset to the UK, but they need to be improved. The current system is a kick in the teeth for those who rely on it, and it's time for a change. The new company has the opportunity to make a real difference, and I'm hopeful that it will rise to the challenge. The railways deserve better, and so do the people who use them.
